I have never actually used a workflow engine like OBE in a production system. I have created workflow-like processes that were hard coded for e-commerce situations. For example, a typical transaction might involve: - Pre Auth Credit Card - Send Order to Warehouse - Post Auth Credit Card - Generate and Send Receipt - Record sale in database And so on. This is a good situation where workflow is useful. There are lots of other cases as well. I think the main reason it has taken so long to take off is that workflow has typically been reserved for large organizations with extremely complex business processes because the cost of ownership was so high. I think the next year or two will result in a larger amount of usage because inexpensive and open source solutions are starting to appear. The key is to make the tools easy to use and install. As for OBE itself, I don't think it is quite ready for a production system. I need to work out some more of the runtime details and release some of the tools such as the designer before it will be really useable. Subject: [Obe-developer] Any real life usage of OBE? I'm interested in concept of Workflow. But seams like it's been moving very slowly in tghe industry. Lot of spec on WfCM was still made in mid-90's. I'm wondering if anyone ever used or seen anyone used workflow, better be OBE, in real life project? And under what circumstance is it used?
