I am not the OP, but can I make a small suggestion that the documentation pdf on the SF page be updated to be the most recent one? Having it reflect the most recent version is nice. You should exclude xattrs when you create your archives. It's the default when using GNU tar and can be done with BSD tar by using the --no-xattrs flag.
