Hi there, The PowerBook 500 is a: 540c upgraded with a Apple PPC card running at 100 (99) MHz Active matrix display capable of thousands of colors (16 bit) at 640x400 resolution 40Mb ram (8Mb on processor upgrade card + 32Mb ram module) 19.9 Global Village internal modem The rest is all on spec I tried MachKernel-2.4.30-pre1-bk-PB1 and MachKernel-2.4.30-pre1-bk, both these stoped not at MMU:mapin ram done but it starts writing at the top of the screen again with the folowing: ---------------------TOP OF SCREEN----------------- MMU: setio MMU: exit setup_arch: enter setup_arch: bootmem arch: exit "Writes one blank line" "Writes second blank line and stops" The other kernel I tried is MachKernel-YDL30-030623, this one gets along further to the kernel panic discribed in my original post I have a powermac 9600 (Running OS 9.1 and 10.4.5 at the present) that I can connect to the Modem/Printer Port of the PowerBook just tell me what I nead to do. Tried BootX and the screen just goes black and nothing happens. Hi Carlos, I did not yet start porting because I'm still very busy with getting the Interrupt and PMU handling stable. You won't have much fun with a machine that powers itself off once in a while or perhaps more often. Hola, in the latest kernel I disabled the lines that produce these lines: "eth0: warning! sonic entering with priv already allocated! eth0: discarding, will attempt to reallocate" Are you absolutely sure you really downloaded my latest kernel and put it in the right place with the right name? I will download the kernel again. I am using mklinux booter that I got from the nubus-pmac site, and i'm using a "cracked" Mac OS 9.1. I'm going to revert to Mac OS 8, download the kernel again. Thanks I never thought it would be so hard. But I'm happy to be helping make support available for yet another machine. In my previous post I had stated that I was going to instal Mac OS 8, new mklinux booter and your newest kernel I did all of these and it still hangs and shuts-down after this eth0 PB500/PPC onboard SONIC with a kernel check (I don't realy know what that meens...) If I can sugest. Hi Carlos, I added that new line in order to see if the driver gets the right path. The machine check should be caused by an access to an address that is not occupied by any hardware registers. I'll compile a kernel without SONIC support for you and then compile the SONIC driver as a module. You don't have a linux system installed, have you? Hi Carlos, I replaced the "Mach Kernel" and "miboot.image" kernel image file with version that don't include the SONIC driver. It would be best if you could install a linux system so that we can test the SONIC driver built as a module. But can you install without network access? That different behaviour with miboot is strange. In fact I never tried miboot with the latest kernel myself.Has anyone else been successful with the miboot.image or the vmlinux image? The kernel panics because there is no ramdisk attached to the kernel image. I'll replace the "Mach Kernel" image with one with attached Debian Sarge ramdisk. It should be there within the next 30 minutes. A bootlog of the boot messages produced by the miboot.image would be interesting. I downloaded another copy of the miboot image and it now works on the pb1400 without any glitches. With all of your hacking abilities in the group list combined, I'm wondering if anyone has figure out a way to add more memory to the powerbook 1400 beyond the 64meg limit? Hi, I now added a command to the early boot process that will display the machine ID passed by the boot loader. The miboot.image file on my webspace contains that patch. Please look for the line that says: "pmac_init(): NuBus PowerMac MachID: 0x{value}" and report {value}. Both "miboot.image" and "Mach Kernel" produce the debugging messages enabled that I mentioned in my last email. That messages will only be written to the console if the console loglevel is set to show debugging messages for example using the "debug" kernel boot argument. Klogd will log these message to the harddisk once it gets launched by the booting process. With the debian installer ramdisk the messages will be displayed on the third console. Hi again, I noticed that in the kernel log the detected ADB devices like keyboard and trackpad are missing. This seems to be a PMU issue. It might help to hit apple and power keys simultaneously at the point where it stops booting. If that doesn't help you could try to press these keys once or twice per second from the detection of SCSI devices on. There should be printed some debugging messages when you hit these keys. The continuous hitting of the keys got me to the keyboard choosing of the installer but it locked there and I wasn't able to make it get there again. Hi again, I compiled a kernel with all the debugging messages enabled that I used to develop the new interrupt handling and PMU driver code. It seems the PB 500 is somewhat different in the interrupt controller hardware compared with the PB 5300 and 1400. I also wonder if the PB 2300 in that aspect behaves similar to the PB 500 or the PB 5300/1400. In order to get all messages displayed on the serial console as well as on the screen you can add "console=tty0" to the kernel arguments. I would be interested in what messages are displayed when you press apple-poweron one time after the bootup process has stopped. A ZTerm log would be most informative but rather long this time. It might also take some time for the kernel to switch to the screen with the penguin logo. Hi Carlos, I now replaced the "Mach Kernel" kernel image file on my webspace with a new one. It also contains the Sarge installation ramdisk. I have again patched the interrupt handling: I found the reason for the messages "m2_get_irq: could not find pending ICR interrupt" and I think it might as well be reason why you often got interrupts twice or more often - and the PMU CB1 interrupt can only be handled twice (with the current PMU driver). So have good luck! I also found out that the SONIC could not have worked but the reason for the machine check might yet be another one. I didn't compile the driver into the kernel. Once the interrupt handling works I'll send you the module. It boot's but... Can't install. When I get to the install base system step, it starts but fails while copying items. It doesn't fail in the same place.
