booting NST (desktop) hangs accessing "hda" after it probes out the hardware.

I have tried disabling DMA with no luck.

hints? clues? clever (and helpful) insults :-)

    Thanks,
    Jim

      more details:
booting also fails with "base" and "ide"

messages leading up to hang are:
      hda: ST3120026AS, ATA DISK drive
hdb: probing with STATUS (0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS 0x50
hdb: probing with STATUS (0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS 0x50
      blk: <queueing stuff>
      hdc: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
      ide0: <stuff> irq9
      ide1: <more stuff> irq15
      hda: attached ide disk driver

      <time passes.....................>

Again, any help would be appreciated.

What version of the NST are you booting?

Also, did your try the "mbase" boot option ("base" won't work in newer versions unless you specify your ram disk size).

If you can't get the "mbase" option to boot, I'm not sure what to tell you. From the output you listed, it looks like your CDROM is connected via a IDE.

If you can get the "mbase" option to boot and are able to log in, can you try:

        /root/bin/auto_mnt_cdrom
        ls /mnt/cdrom

Let's see if we can get to the point that it can access your CDROM drive.

It is NST 1.0.6 and I have booted from that CD on an older Gateway (500MHz) so I know the image is viable.

I had tried "ide" but I just tried:
      mbase
      mbast NST_CDROM_IDE

and they both hung at the same spot.

I'll try and grab more of the messages the next time I try. Maybe there is something else that would be helpful to you.

If you can't boot from "mbase", that isn't a good sign.

If you have access to a serial port, you could try booting "serial", this will allow you to capture the output from the boot up sequence.

Is it possible you have a finicky CD drive? I've had CDs which are readable on one system, yet not on another.

In any case, you may need to wait a few weeks until the 1.2.0 release is out. It's based on Fedora Core 2 instead of RedHat 9 and has support for more hardware.

It looks like this may be an issue with (either) that particular type CDROM *or* the fact that the hard disk is SATA. I did a search for the CD string (HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B) on google and found a lot of linux related issues.

      The system is configured with:
      Primary SATA: ST3120026AS
      Secondary SATA: none
      Primary IDE
                  0: none
                  1: none
      Secondary IDE
                  0: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B
                  1: none

I'll probably just wait for NST 1.2 and try again unless I get more free time to investigate.

Let me know if you have any brainstorms!!

      Thanks!

      Jim
