I see the large list of plugins but there is no docs telling what each does. I could infer from the name although that does not tell the whole story. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you looking at this list? The Plugin Manager that comes with Notepad++ provides a brief description (which is provided by the author of each plugin) and most have a reference to a website with more information.
