Load config.xml failed!

I have had Notepad++ installed for a while. Now suddenly, I get this error message.
It doesn't tell me why it's looking for 'config.xml' or what the problem is. It happens every time Notepad++ starts and then Notepad++, as a result, always crashes when I close it.

My first suggestion is that we handle this a little better. And secondly, how can I fix this?

Here are a couple of threads to try:

I did a search for config.xml on this forum by using the search box in the upper right corner.  It is interesting to me that the best response thread had the exact same title as your post.  --Joel

Just a note to the developers.  I have the same problem, but I am pretty sure I know what action caused the config.xml file to become corrupted.  From windows explorer I highlighted several files and pressed the enter key.  I was attempting to avoid opening each file individually from Notepad++. After doing this, notepad++ crashed and everytime since then it opened with the 'load config.xml failed' message.  I also noticed that the toolbar is totally different and it crashes when closed.  Otherwise it seems to work normally.  I suspect that the config.xml file contains the record of what files were open last time and when I tried to open all those new files simultaneously it got confused.

I am seeing this problem frequently.  So far, I think that every time I've seen it I've been running Notepad++ in a virtual machine (VMWare) and rebooting the VM while Notepad++ is still running.

If it matters, it is likely that the files that are open in Notepad++ are modified during the shutdown process.
