Cannot Install Notepad++: What is Wrong?

I recently inherited the previous grad student's work desktop. I have an account on it now, with admin privileges. It had Notepad++ previously installed on it, but had a weird error where the "updates are available" message popped up every time I opened a file with Notepad, whether I had updated or not. Yesterday when I got the message I clicked "yes, install" and the new version downloaded. All program icons disappeared, as well as Notepad++ from the Windows Explorer Context menu. I uninstalled and went to the website to reinstall. I downloaded the .exe installer.
I get the following errors, for all versions to 5.7.

I get the same error with 5.8.5 and 5.7.
I have also downloaded the .zip and the .7z folders in addition to the .exe. This has not helped.

What is causing this? What am I missing?

    Thank you.

It looks like you've got a copy of Notepad++ already running - check your processes list in task manager for notepad++, and kill it off.  Failing that, a reboot should fix it.  You could also search for what has the SciLexer.dll file open with Process Explorer from sysinternals (now microsoft).

    Cheers, and happy holidays,
    Dave.

That was it!! Once I killed off the Notepad++ process in the task manager - voila! Installation went as normal.

    Thank you!!

    Happy New Year!
