I have a simple question that I don't see on the forum already...
I want to always save all files with the default *.txt extension and to my [C:\My Documents] folder. Is there a way to default this? Currently I have to enter in the extension and navigate to the correct folder because the default is the [C:\Documents and settings\<userID>].

I think that would be a good idea. If NotePad++ was for Linux, it would be better as is, but not for Windows.
A possible explaination for why they did it like that: it was built as a multi-language code editor and not a .txt editor so they felt a default .txt is not neccessarily right.

To avoid having to navigate every time, place a shortcut to C:\My Documents in C:\Documents and settings\<userID>. Give it a name that will make it appear at the top of the list. Then all you have to do is double click it to get to the right place each time. It's still a nuisance, but not anywhere near as much.

I would like to know this too. Even selecting .txt from the dropdown save menu does not give the .txt extension to the file.
