Notepad seems to continuously try to access open files, and this is a bit annoying as some of the files are from an SFTP network drive from a server on the other side of the continent; so natually, notepad loves to freeze up for seconds at a time while I'm working.
Is there any way of avoiding this?

did you treid de-selecting the "enable" option from "file status auto-detection" under settings -> preferences -> MISC?
Actually, yes I did; this has no affect unfortunately. Anything else?
