    Have been using Notepad++ for about 6 months, but lately it has started running away with the cpu, pegging it at 100%.  It usually happens when it is minimized in the background.

    I am using the spell check, and explorer plugins with it.

    Any ideas on how to prevent this?

      Did you try starting NP++ with the -noPlugin command line switch? If the problem persists, it is a Notepad++ issue. Otherwise, one of your plugin may be the culprit, try adding them back one after the other so as to spot where trouble starts.

    I have been getting this problem as well.
    Ever since the optional transparent search pane was added in sometime after 5.3.1.

    I have been having this issue for the last few versions, and to my knowledge it is NOT present in 5.3.1.

    I've also had an issue with the search pane defaulting to having 'in Selection' checked with strange results.

    For these reasons, I have gone back to 5.3.1
    Usually when it does run off with my CPU the app crashes, only rarely does it ever become responsive again.

    I have also been seeing notepad++ %100 cpu runaways.  I am running 5.4.5.  They seem to happen when notepad is NOT the foreground application.

    Is there a way to track anything about this when it happens so that I can report the conditions/specifics to you?

    I have not seen the issue pop up again after I reinstalled it with no plugins.

    Some plugins are known to cause such problems; unfortunately, yhey are among the most widely used and useful ones.

    My list of known offenders is short:
    * Funvction List
    * Hex Editor
    * Explorer
    * Windows manager
    * Change Markers
    * FTP_synchronize

    But doing without them is clearly difficult.
