I took the plunge and decided to erase my entire cell phone address book and resync it against my thunderbird contacts (Nokia 6102i).  I got a bug which indicated it couldn't find any entries (I didn't jot it down) -- by adding a single "blank" entry (name = blank, phone = 555-1212), it fixed the problem.
