On the nms project's "news" page: https://sourceforge.net/news/?group_id=39625 there is a link titled "Project FAQ" which leads to the following url https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=127095 which in turn has a link to another url http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=7962&group_id=39625 I think that the above url is supposed to contain the FAQ, but instead I get "Page not found". |

Matt got tired of waiting for us to fix the files (even tho' it's nightime in the UK) and has emailed the SourceForge admins (copying me) demanding that action is taken. I've therefore removed the README files from all of the packages (except countdown, which I fixed last night) and have replaced them with a skeleton which needs to be filled in. I haven't put these skeleton files into CVS yet. You'll need to download a tarball from <http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/> and pull it from there. The skeleton file currently points people to the READMEs on Matt's site. This is obviously not a good idea, so the quicker we get it all fixed, the better. Thanks for your help. Well, it seems that all the attention we've received today means that Matt Wright has finally noticed us. I've just got an email from him. He seems pretty ok about the concept of nms. He says: "I admire the time you guys have taken to create drop-in replacements for my code" and "I can be a good sport and take the nms jab" and even "I wrote that code years ago when I didn't know how to program" Which is all very positive. On the other hand, he's mightily upset that we're still distributing README files that are heavily based on his originals. And, of course, he has every right to be upset by that. We _are_ violating his copyright. Now, I was planning to rewrite all the docs at some point. But you know how it is. Documentation isn't exactly the most exciting job in the world. But now it all beoomes a but more urgent. We really need to remove all of Matt's documentation over this coming weekend. I don't think I can do it all myself so I need some help. I've done the README in countdown, so you've got an example to work from (note that's in CVS - not been released yet). I'll do all the smaller scripts (ffa, rand_image, rand_link, rand_text, ssi_rand_image, textclock and textcounter). If others could volunteer to take on formmail, guestbook, search and wwwboard I'd be grateful. I stress that this weekend that aim is simply to replace Matt's docs with our own. It would be great if it was _better_ than Matt's, but at the moment I'll settle for "different". We'll improve it later. Please help. Dave... -- Drugs are just bad m'kay |

In case you haven't seen it yet, my CGI article is currently the lead article on <http://www.perl.com/>. This has lead to some discussion on Perl Monks at <http://perlmonks.org/index.pl?node_id=141461> Unfortunately the talk isn't all good. Someone is accusing us of being less secure than Matt. Obviously I'd like to avoid those ideas becoming common if at all possible. Is the criticism valid? Can we do anything about it? If we can address the problem quickly then we can probably turn this into a good thing. Dave... -- "Don't you boys know any _nice_ songs?" |

To Whom it may concern:
I wrote a CGI textfile database some time ago that almost entirely used
configuration files for it's setup. In general, this is how it works:
Change two lines in script itself - bang line & configuration file path.
Everything else is done in these files (names are arbitrary):
SCRIPT.CFG - defines debug settings, database delim, and supporting file
paths
FIELD.CFG - defines the database field descriptors, such as number of
fields, field names, field type (text, autodate, key,
createdate),
Maximum entries per display page, sort order, and primary and
secondary sort key fields.
The program uses pre-written Header, Footer, and Data Templates to display
results. That means that customizing the look can be done with any HTML
editor.
It has a search feature (which works fine, but is just a simple 'look-n-see'
function), and admin scripts. It does NOT use CGI.pm, as I am not a big fan
(CGI.pm writes non-compliant HTML, and does not allow one to specify
newlines to be printed, which makes troubleshooting difficult).
I've attached the README file. If nms would be interested in looking at this
as an addition to the package, please let me know, and I will be happy to
contribute it to the mix.

I've copied my reply to the nms developers' list as that seems to be the appropriate place to have these discussions. You might like to consider joining the mailing list and continuing the discussion there - <http://lists.sourceforge.net/mailman/listinfo/nms-cgi-devel> > Here are a couple of first impressions: > > * since the thingies are cgi-scripts, why not call them *.cgi Naming of CGI scripts is either a huge issue or a non-issue depending on how you look at it. Personally, I like to have no extension and put all the scripts in /cgi-bin. I don't like the idea of .pl as it tells the blackhats that you're running Perl on your server and that's too much information IMO. But one of the rules of nms is that we don't change unnecessary parts of Matt's interface. Therefore we use Matt's names for the scripts. > * use Net::SMTP instead of /usr/lib/sendmail, no need to reinvent the > wheel :) Sorry, we've had this discussion. Another fundemental rule of nms is that we don't use CPAN modules as our target audience would be driven away if we made installation too complex. I think I mention this in the article. > * use Texttools in combination with __DATA__ for the html. I believe > there exists a module which lets you have several different __DATA__ > tags, so you can have __ERROR__ as well. I like this idea. We can't use Inline::Files (because of the no modules rule) but we could write our own simple templating system and store the templates in __DATA__. I've already started doing something like that with wwwadmin.pl (part of wwwboard). > * use some configuration module, so that the novice doesn't even have > to dig into the perl-code Again, this comes down to using Matt's interface. We have been discussing ways to make installation easier. Maybe a CGI script that can configure the other programs. I had never really had the need to do this in Perl before - does this seem
like a reasonable way of doing it :
for my $foo ( 0 .. 65536 )
{
my $I = 1;
my $out = '';
while($I <= $foo )
{
my $blah = $foo & $I ? 1 : 0;
$out = $blah . $out;
$I *= 2;
}
$out ||= '0';
print "$foo : ", ($out eq sprintf("%b",$foo) ? 'good' : 'bad' ),"\n";
}
You might have noticed I am not a mathematician :)

OK, I have a two year old gallery script right here on my laptop - it's virtually NMS compliant except it the HTML is compliant 4.0 rather than XHTML and it uses CGI::Carp in that un-5.004.04 friendly way. All it does is take a directory of image files (and possibly an index describing them) and displays them with backward and forward navigation. Shall I check it in to the CVS for approval after I have NMSed it up ? /J\ -- Jonathan Stowe | <http://www.gellyfish.com> | This space for rent | |

I guess we are agreed that all of this should be under the:
"This script is free software; you are free to redistibute it
and/or modify it under the same terms as Perl itself."
I would like to add to the README files something like :
"The Perl license can be found in the README file in the Perl source or
at <http://somewhere>"
Except I can't find a good URL to somewhere I might find the file online,
good as in reliable and official seeming not good as in someone unpacked
the Perl distribution on an FTP server with good connectivity ;-}
Any Ideas ?
