Hi all. I see there has been some recent stuff happening with nil. Good, I have been waiting ages for someting to happen. I am a programmer and would be interested in helping out. I've got a bit of experience using SDL, and SDLNet. I am in the middle of making an asteroids clone( with networking ), and it's coming along well, and I was thinking I might be able to help you all out. I see that the new stuff involved getting rid of quite a lot of code, so you are doing lots of refactoring and the like, so maybe when the structure has settled a little you might like to give me something to do? I have no idea where to start, I've never worked in a project group before... I'm hoping the current wave of development doesn't die down. Good Luck! brian. |

Distributions like Debian split these packages into 2 parts. The library itself and the headers. If you want to build something that depends on a library, you need the headers. So: Try installing all packages plus the corresponding "-devel" packages. |

Hey, i have been trying to install nil for some time now, but i keep running into problems. First, when i ran the configure script, it told me that /home/cj/my didnt exist, so it couldnt configure. This is true, i was running the script from /home/cj/my downloads/nil. I made that folder one word, and it worked. Next, it told me that i didnt have SDL installed, but my distro came with all the necessary libraries, and they are all installed on my computer. Any tips on getting this to work out? Thanks for your help, Collin __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! Have fun online with music videos, cool games, IM and more. Check it out! http://discover.yahoo.com/online.html |

Hi list, currently NiL is doing some progress. We (ilari and myself) established a scons based build system and ilari also did some major work to the VFS. There are very few things that stop us from releasing a new version. Main issue: The game is currently awfully slow when more than 1 player is connected to the server. It looks like the server can't handle it right. It was discussed on IRC that the best solution would be changing the game frome frame based rendering to time based rendering. I played around with that for several weeks but it looks like I can't do it. So my question goes to this list: Anyone interested in doing that job? Regards from Germany, Christoph |

Now I get the same error. I think that it will be fixed by the sf staff. |

Thought I would check this out and have a look at it but when I try to log in to CVS I get connection refused: $ cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/nil login Logging in to :pserver:ano...@cv...:2401/cvsroot/nil CVS password: cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from cvs.sourceforge.net: M PserverBackend::PserverBackend() Connect (Connection refused) $ Is public access now denied, or is this a temporary glitch? I also could not browse CVS. Other SF sites seem to be working. Regards and thanks, Mike __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hi,
I need some more information which version of NiL you are compiling (I
hope you are using the latest CVS version (and please tell me when you
did the checkout)). I will look into that in a few hours since I'm at
work right now.
Regards,
Christoph aka egore

AFAIK there is no map editor. I never thought about having one, yet :D But there definitely will be will one when there is a real release an a need for it. Currenly no effort will be put into it. From: http://www.loria.fr/~molli/cvs/doc/cvs_9.html --------------------------------------------- There are two issues with using CVS to store binary files. The first is that CVS by default converts line endings between the canonical form in which they are stored in the repository (linefeed only), and the form appropriate to the operating system in use on the client (for example, carriage return followed by line feed for Windows NT). The second is that a binary file might happen to contain data which looks like a keyword (see section Keyword substitution), so keyword expansion must be turned off. The `-kb' option available with some CVS commands insures that neither line ending conversion nor keyword expansion will be done. --------------------------------------------- Further down on that page are the commands that you need to use to convert files already in the repository to binary files: --------------------------------------------- $ cvs admin -kb <filename> $ cvs update -A <filename> # For non-unix systems: # Copy in a good copy of the file from outside CVS $ cvs commit -m "make it binary" <filename> --------------------------------------------- Does anyone have admin privileges on the repository who could make this change? Some care should also be taken to use the -kb option when adding new binary files to the repository. When this is done properly, there should be no problem with storing them in CVS. Cheers, Robert. |

Yes, CVS stores the PNG files as text and inserts windows newlines when you checkout on a windows box. I think I proposed before to NiL's previous maintainer to separate the data from the source and not even put the data in CVS (similar to Heroes). I don't think I ever got an answer. I still think it's a good idea, though I'll leave that up to the new developers. |

Could you try getting the graphics from the last source "release" an check if it works with them? I think every graphic is present in that file. But the directories have changed. So you have to move the graphics, not just the data directory. Am Sonntag, den 05.09.2004, 10:14 +1000 schrieb Phil Howlett: > Hey guys? > > The win32 port is kicking along nicely. Which one is failing? The one searching for sdl-config? Or the one searching for libsdl? Or one of those searching for sdl-ttf or sdl-mixer? Please send the output of ./configure. Hey guys? The win32 port is kicking along nicely. I can now move my worm around and dig holes. Lots of fun. However I'm getting alot of erros with corrupt graphics, especially in the gfx/obj/extras folder. I can't even open up the png files in paintshop pro. Perhaps CVS has manged them (it isn't good with binary files). Cheers, Phil. |

Hi there, that one is no OSX issue. It simply comes from cvs, since it does not remeber if a file was executable. Try: chmod a+x configure and retry if you can run ./configure Regards, Chris Chris Bartels wrote: > I was trying to compile the latest cvs on OS X and when I do > ./configure it tells me command not found. I was trying to compile the latest cvs on OS X and when I do ./configure it tells me command not found. Last time I tried this (about a year ago, I think) I at least got a useful error, but now just this. I get the same problem using xterm in X11 or the Terminal. Does anyone have experience with this especially on OS X? |

Its active, but what do we have to discuss? If have something to discuss, go ahead. I'll answer. Something to discuss (or as news): 1.) ilari, phil, nym and myself were in the last few days active in #nil on irc.freenode.net 2.) ilari rewrote the VFS 3.) phil made the win32 port 4.)
