Documenting the difference is a good idea.  But has you have seen,
there is very little formal ngspice documentation.  :-(

However, Peter Kaiser did create a table of device numbers several
years ago, and put it on his website.  You can find it here:

Look under the heading "Models in ngspice and gnucap".
