  I can't correlate the presence or absence of this period with the
port change commands working or not.  Would you be willing to put it
back and test again, to see if it was something else that changed that
caused your port and vlan control to start working?

I committed a fix for this a couple of weeks ago; unfortunately,
Sourceforge's anonymous CVS is currently frozen at a point in time
before that.  You can try the snapshot instead:
