I wrote a patch that is currently in CVS awaiting the next release (I believe) that introduces an hourly cronjob that, instead of writing configs at the end of every job, writes the configs on switches that have had changes made in the last hour. This way they are batched together as to not hammer the flash with writes. Currently only Cisco devices are supported.
