Category: binaries Group: linux >Status: Closed Resolution: Works For Me Priority: 7 Private: No Submitted By: Andy Donati (adonati) Assigned to: Niels Baggesen (nba) Summary: Unknown host error - SNMPCMD with udp6: version 5.6.1.1 Initial Comment: Command utilities with using udp6: result in "unknown host" errors using version 5.6.1.1. Using the same command in version 5.5 works OK on the same host. Details: >> Version 5.6.1.1 [root@localhost /]# /usr/local/bin/snmpwalk -V NET-SNMP version: 5.6.1.1 [root@localhost /]# /usr/local/bin/snmpwalk -c public -v 2c udp6:1::1 No log handling enabled - using stderr logging snmpwalk: Unknown host (udp6:1::1) (No such file or directory) [root@localhost /]# >> Version 5.5 [root@localhost /]# /usr/bin/snmpwalk -V NET-SNMP version: 5.5 [root@localhost /]# /usr/bin/snmpwalk -c public -v 2c udp6:1::1 Timeout: No Response from udp6:1::1 [root@localhost /]# Running CentOS Release 6.2: Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-220.23.1.el6.i686 #1 SMP Mon Jun 18 16:56:21 BST 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andy Donati (adonati) Date: 2012-08-27 07:51 Message: It appears as though the 5.6.1.1 installation had issues. Thanks for you help. Thank you for your help and insight into this problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Niels Baggesen (nba) Date: 2012-08-24 06:15 Message: Well, someone, somewhere, must have built it for you to nstall ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andy Donati (adonati) Date: 2012-08-24 04:56 Message: The net-snmp utilities version 5.6.1.1 was installed using a package manager such as rpm or yum and was not built from source code, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Niels Baggesen (nba) Date: 2012-08-23 23:16 Message: It makes no difference whether IPv6 is enabled on the host or not (for the message you received) What will make a difference is whether you run configure with --disable-ipv6 or --enable-ipv6 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andy Donati (adonati) Date: 2012-08-23 14:37 Message: >Message: >Are you sure your 5.6.1.1 was compiled with ipv6 enabled? >It works for me with snmpgetnext udp6:::1 1 for the current 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 >and 5.7 versions. While troubleshooting the problem, it was noted that NETWORKING_IPV6 was set to 'no' in /etc/sysconfig/network It was later changed to 'yes' with a subsequent 'service network restart', but the change did not solve the problem. Therefore 5.6.1.1 was probably installed with ipv6 disabled. The earlier version of 5.5 (which is working) could have also been installed with ipv6 disabled but cannot say that with 100% certainty. If ipv6 is required to be enabled on the host before installation, it can explain why SNMPCMD is not working with ipv6. Current configuration: [root@localhost sysconfig]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network NETWORKING=yes NETWORKING_IPV6=yes HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain [root@localhost sysconfig]# ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Niels Baggesen (nba) Date: 2012-08-23 13:52 Message: Are you sure your 5.6.1.1 was compiled with ipv6 enabled? It works for me with snmpgetnext udp6:::1 1 for the current 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 and 5.7 versions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Andy Donati (adonati) Date: 2012-08-23 08:48 Message: Another test: [root@localhost /]# /usr/local/bin/Snmp5.6.1/snmpwalk -V NET-SNMP version: 5.6.1.1 [root@localhost /]# /usr/local/bin/Snmp5.6.1/snmpwalk -c public -v 2c 'udp6:[1::1]' No log handling enabled - using stderr logging snmpwalk: Unknown host (udp6:[1::1]) (No such file or directory) [root@localhost /]# [root@localhost /]# [root@localhost /]# /usr/bin/snmpwalk -V NET-SNMP version: 5.5 [root@localhost /]# /usr/bin/snmpwalk -c public -v 2c 'udp6:[1::1]' Timeout: No Response from udp6:[1::1] [root@localhost /]# [root@localhost /]# ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Bill Fenner (fenner) Date: 2012-08-23 07:47 Message: Try 'udp6:[1::1]'.
