[Navit-users] Is it possible to test navit without "make install" ?

I like to test-run new software before "make install",
so that I don't overwrite a working navit with a broken one.

I just tried to run navit from the build directory, and it
crashed while reading the map. The installed navit
does not crash. (I used the new osm2navit to
create a new map, in case there are version differences.)

Is it supposed to be possible to run navit this way?
Or do I have to install properly before testing?
If so, is backing up the old navit binary enough
to restore the old program?
