Initial Comment:
I suggest moving AUTOCONF, AUTOMAKE, AUTOHEADER, ACLOCAL out to definable variables in autogen.sh (see attached patch). This enables usage of autogen.sh e.g. on FreeBSD or other systems without patching by defining appropriate env's.
