in the "New User" section, I keep getting error
messages like this:

Warning: Unable to jump to row 0 on MySQL result index
2 in /var/www/phpim/includes/mysql_cl.inc on line 79

Warning: Unable to jump to row 0 on MySQL result index
4 in /var/www/phpim/includes/mysql_cl.inc on line 79

Yes, I'm aware of this problem.
It is fixed in the latest version on CVS , so either use the
CVS version, or wait for a new release.
note: I think you can still add users despite this errors

Have you create the Tables in Mysql with the "myphpim-mysql"
script ?
