For those that warm up to the idea, I would start by studying the open-source solution mentioned in this thread. In fact, I would expect that the core of such a tool does not depend on the input language (e.g. C) or the output language (e.g. RTL). In that case, one could get a head start by simply implementing an alternative front end (Python subset) and back end (MyHDL RTL.)
