I think there are two directions we could go with this. First, we could allow you to watch DVDs via your filesystem. This would allow you to watch a DVD via NFS or CIFS, much like xine can play a DVD off a filesystem with full menu navigation. Second, we could rely on a server such as mythtv to feed the video to the mvp. I don't know if myth or videolan or anything else would really support this type of thing. Of course, before we really start worrying about this, I think we need to fix some outstanding issues with AC3 audio.
