yep - understood - not in the spec.

i am also looking for comments on how others are dealing with this 
issue. is this not a common problem?

i plan on supporting the ability to define a configuration file 
(index.xml.config) associated with the xml document (index.xml) and 
resolve this at runtime. shaky?
