Thanks to Eric for his suggestions. I did add in a few DEBUG 
statements in scsi_sun.c to isolate the problem definitively
to the sgen driver.

I downloaded and played with the sst driver code and finally
got full operation with the sst64 driver. A compiled version
can be acquired from:
ftp://ftp.arkeia.com/pub/arkeia5.1/solaris/sparc64/solaris2.7/sst64.tar

I do wish that they included sst.c so I could track their changes.

In any case we can now add the following to the mtx compatibility
list:
