I suspect that this problem is addressed in the FAQ, the man page, and on 
http://mtx.sourceforge.net

Hint: the little robot arm is snapping its claws over thin air because you 
haven't told the tape drive to eject the tape to where the robot can grab the 
tape. The little robot arm can't reach into the drive to yank out the tape, 
you gotta use 'mt' to tell the drive to spit it out!
