The scrollwheel could be used to scrub frames, for example with the alt key as a modifier. This is also the default behavior in Blender to move forward and back in the timeline.
When hovering over the volume slider, it could increase/decrease the volume, VLC and other video players have this feature.

Now that was quick.
Here are some things i noticed while testing the new features in 5.8.5:
MrViewer uses "scroll up" to scrub forward. blender uses "scroll down" for forward, probably because that's the same direction you would use to move forward in a PDF document or webpage (on windows at least). I find that the current scroll direction in MrViewer works fine, is maybe even a bit more natural, so thats good for now.
Scrolling over the volume slider works indeed, but it also reacts to scrolling anywhere else on the timeline. This is also no problem, but could be one as soon as you want other areas in the timeline to use scrollwheel as well. But again, nothing to worry about at the moment.
The new zoom setting feels indeed better, but here is an issue that i just discovered: When you repeatedly scroll in and out, it moves you further out with every cycle.
Also, ideally there would be an additional scroll-snapping position for the zoom level you would get when pressing F: so if i press F to focus, then scroll in, then out, i would end up with the same zoom level as when i started. Maybe its also easier to make the zoom levels entirely relative to the starting point (if it doesnt already work that way) Thats just a detail that some image viewers have, and that makes it slightly nicer to use.

Try the following beta of v5.8.6 that has zooming in/out to the same factors:

Yeah, looks good now
There is an issue regarding this and anamorphic videos. Doing the in-out zoom thing there moves the image further and further upwards with each step.
I was able to reproduce the issue and have a fix that will make it to v5.8.7.
