i recently ripped video files from two older DVDs, and i noticed that the MP4s always looked a bit darker in MrViewer compared to when i watch them with VLC.
Yesterday i noticed that all of these files were using the SMPTE170M color space in MrViewer. When i switch that to "RGB" or "unspecified", it suddenly looks brigher, and comparable to VLC again.

mrViewer chooses the color space that is saved in the movie file. If that happens to be SMPTE170M it will choose that. Only if no color space is found it will set it to unspecified. Your ripper program is inserting that information into the movie file and mrViewer is correctly displaying the movie with it.

If you want to always use Unspecified, you can set it in the Preferences->Video->YUV Conversion->Always Use Uspecified.
