First of all, thanks for your fast answer. Now some comments: 1) Regarding the l2cc, we installed it successfully in a kernel 2.4.20 = but didn't work (no ping between PC1 and PC3) with the following setup: PC1 -- PC2 -- PC3=20 eth0 PC1: 192.168.10.1 eht0 PC2: 192.168.20.1 eth1 PC2: 192.168.30.1 eth0 PC3: 192.168.10.2 =20 The l2cc was installed in PC2 and we mapped eth0 to eth1 and eth1 to = eth0 (l2ccadm -a -i eth0 -o eth1, l2ccadm -a -i eth1 -o eth0). We will continue investigating was is going on with this setup, seems = like the interfaces in PC2 are not working in promiscuous mode so from my = point of view traffic from PC1 to PC3 will not be received by PC2 interfaces. 2) If we succeed testing the l2cc in kernel 2.4 we will continue with = the migration of the l2cc patch to kernel 2.6. 3) In order to continue this is our plan: At the beginning we will keep all the signalling issues out of the scope = of our implementation. So we will be focused in local cross connect and L2 = PDU encapsulation. As far I understand the cross connect issue should be = solved with l2cc (migrating it to kernel 2.6) or with the new tc_actions so our main work will be done in the L2 PDU encapsulation. If we succeed to = finish it, we will start with the signalling for Martini style PW. Let us know if you think we are in the right direction. All comment = and/or suggestion are welcome. Just for your knowledge we have good background = in communications but we are missing programming experience. Diego G. =20 -----Mensaje original----- De: James R. Leu [mailto:jl...@mi...]=20 Enviado el: jueves, 23 de junio de 2005 11:23 Para: die...@ad... CC: mpl...@li... Asunto: Re: [mpls-linux-general] Ethernet over MPLS vs PWe3-rfc3985 and drafts Currently ethernet over MPLS forwarding is broken. But it will not take much to fix. I have another project which aims to provide a generic layer 2 cross = connect framework for the linux kernel. The project hasn't received much = attention because I've been busy working on mpls-linux. The last patch from the = l2cc project provided a mechanism to specify any frame interface (ethernet, = VLAN, PPP, GRE) and redirect frames arriving at the interface to another = interface or on to a LSP. The implementation is very straight forward and easy to extend. My guess is that you would not have too much difficulty applying that = patch to a recent 2.6 kernel. One thing to note is that the recent 'tc action' work in the 2.6.11 and 2.6.12 kernel might provide a better infrastructure to do the same thing as my l2cc patch. You would have to add some new 'actions', but that = should be fairly straight forward. As far as the signaling side, there does not exist a working = implementation. I have added the encode and decode functions for martini style signaling (via LDP) but none of the internals have been implemented. I have the beginning of a l2-circuit configuration and infrastructure for quagga, but it is = not complete. So the long and the short of it is that there is plenty of room for improvement in this area. Let me know where you want to start and I = will be happy to point you in the right direction and answer questions. There has been lots of threads about this on the mailing list. The short of it: - increased latency !=3D slower !=3D less throughput - make sure you have turned off all debugging (some of it needs to be compiled out) - LERs inherently have a higher latency then normal IP routing (IP lookup AND label lookup or push) if you have LERs in your test path, it will have higher latency - mpls-linux is not optimized for speed, but for flexibility and correctness - I welcome definitive data that proves LSR throughput is sub-optimal - I welcome patches that provide a definitive decrease in latency or solve any sub-optimal throughput if it exists On Tue, Jun 28, 2005 at 02:56:14PM +0200, Ra?l Gil wrote: > Hello! Hi vittorio, This is a very common error when building quagga. By default, the user an= d group the quagga daemons (zebra, ospfd ,...) belong to is "quagga". You will have problems when invoking these daemons with another user, for instance root. There are two possibilities in order to proceed: - to run the apps with the user quagga - to setup the quagga soft in order to change the user. I recommend the second one. Just try to invoke the ./configure with the following parameters: ./configure --enable-user=3Droot --enable-group=3Droot then build the soft and everything should work. There has been a lot of work on LDP recently. There is still more work to be done. The currently released RPM does not contain any of the recent work. I will be making new releases for all mpls-linux software soon. If you want to help on the development side, you will want to setup access to my development tree and compile/install quagga-mpls from their. Read more about this at http://mpls-linux.sf.net/ If you choose to go the development route, please post questions to the mpls-linux-devel mailing list. If you choose to wait for the new RPMs, it shouldn't be too long now. We'll see how my weekend turns out :-) On Fri, Jun 24, 2005 at 10:47:12AM -0300, Alejandro Vazquez wrote: > I have been reading quite a few mails on the mailing list about ldp, and = I saw > that the implementation of ldp is not fully funcitional yet, but I > also saw that it works. I have been reading quite a few mails on the mailing list about ldp, and I = saw that the implementation of ldp is not fully funcitional yet, but I also saw that it works. It may have some bugs, but on an overall basis it should work. I have been trying to use it, and maybe help on the developement, but my problem is really basic, I cannot make it work. I have quagga: quagga-0.97.3-1.FC3mpls1_946, and eventhough I manager to get the ldpd deamon started, I cannot manager to make it exchange any labels. I have ethereal running on my netowrk, and I do not see any LDP messages on it (such as LDP Hello, Keep alive, Label Request, etc), besides, all the packest I send are plain ethernet+ip. My ldpd.conf.sample file is pretty simple, I started it empty, and simply configured by hand. I mainly did two things to try to make it work: 1. use mpls ldp command 2. asign a labelspace to the interface I am working on. I am copying below my configuration below: hostname Router password zebra enable password zebra hostname ospfd log stdout ! mpls static 0 ! interface eth0 ipv6 nd suppress-ra mpls labelspace 0 ! interface eth1 ipv6 nd suppress-ra mpls labelspace 0 ! interface lo ! interface sit0 ipv6 nd suppress-ra ! interface lo0 ! mpls ldp egress connected ! ip prefix-list seciu seq 5 permit 200.108.0.0/16 le 32 ! ip forwarding ! line vty ! Building configuration... Current configuration: ! I would be grateful if you could help me with this issue, Thank you, Alejandro |

I was wondering what would be needed to implement RFC 2547bis on the mpls-linux platform. The project page indicates that "quagga has support for distributing labeling information, but it has not been tied to mpls-linux yet". I was wondering 1. is this still the case? 2. What exactly is needed 3. Roughly, how much effort would this require (developer-days)? 4. Is there anything else which would prevent one from implementing RFC2547bis on mpls-linux, once the "tying to mpls-linux" is accomplished? I have been doing significant work on LDP recently. I have not made a new release yet. I believe this ISO only has released software, which means LDP will still be broken. In the coming weeks I will be creating new releases of all MPLS software including quagga-mpls (with LDP). I would wait until that time to try and use LDP. (alternativly you could retrieve that latest quagga-mpls code from my development tree, read more about how to do that at http://mpls-linux.sf.net) On Thu, Jun 23, 2005 at 01:07:49AM -0300, Alejandro Vazquez wrote: > I am already downloading this distribution, but in the meantime I > would like to ask a question. > I have been working with LDP for some time without any luck yet.=20 > Did you happen to test ldp en this distribution, did it work correctly? >=20 > thank you > Alejandro Vazquez >=20 >=20 > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF.Net email is sponsored by: Discover Easy Linux Migration Strategies > from IBM. Currently ethernet over MPLS forwarding is broken. But it will not take much to fix. I have another project which aims to provide a generic layer 2 cross connect framework for the linux kernel. The project hasn't received much attention because I've been busy working on mpls-linux. The last patch from the l2cc project provided a mechanism to specify any frame interface (ethernet, VLAN, PPP, GRE) and redirect frames arriving at the interface to another interface or on to a LSP. The implementation is very straight forward and easy to ex= tend. My guess is that you would not have too much difficulty applying that patch to a recent 2.6 kernel. One thing to note is that the recent 'tc action' work in the 2.6.11 and 2.6.12 kernel might provide a better infrastructure to do the same thing as my l2cc patch. You would have to add some new 'actions', but that should be fairly straight forward. As far as the signaling side, there does not exist a working implementation. I have added the encode and decode functions for martini style signaling (via LDP) but none of the internals have been implemented. I have the begi= nning of a l2-circuit configuration and infrastructure for quagga, but it is not complete. So the long and the short of it is that there is plenty of room for improvement in this area. Let me know where you want to start and I will be happy to point you in the right direction and answer questions. The xc command is for configuring label swapping on a LSR. 'xc' stands for cross connect, which is what you need for label swapping. The parameters to xc are the ILM and the NHLFE key, and will configure label swapping for packets arriving on the ILM. On Thu, Jun 23, 2005 at 12:24:34AM +0200, Ra?l Gil wrote: > It's ok! I did a similar setup like yours last week, so my memory is still fresh. I used the "mpls xc" command on an LSR to "cross-connect" an incoming = label with an outgoing label. For example, here is what I did on my LSR: /* setup ilm to process incoming label "gen 100" via eth0, labelspace 0 = */ mpls labelspace add dev eth0 labelspace 0 mpls ilm add label gen 100 labelspace 0 /* setup an outgoing label "gen 101 (key 2)" via nexthop 192.168.1.3 */ Mpls nhlfe add key 0 (returned key value 2) mpls nhlfe change key 2 instructions push gen 101 nexthop eth1 ipv4 192.168.1.3 ip route add 192.168.1.3/32 via 192.168.1.3 spec_hn 0x8847 2 /* "Corss-connect" the two labels together to form an LSP */ mpls xc add ilm_label gen 100 ilm_labelspace 0 nhlfe_key 2 My "192.168.1.3" will be your "192.168.4.4." To form a bi-directional LSP, you will need to setup an LSP from your = LER-B to LER-A. I am working on a PowerPoint file to show the details of setting up a bi-directional LSP. I'll send it out when I am done, if there are = interests. (This is just my notes so that I won't forget what I did to make it work = :-) Cheers, John Lin > It's ok! We are working in a telecommunication degree project and we aims to devel= op some additional feature to the patch. The last couple of month we were studying Linux kernel networking stack i= mplementation for kernel 2.6 and the MPLS code itself. At this point we decided to add some features to the Ethernet over MPLS s= upport so we need some clarification in this regards: 1)What is the meaning of the current ?Ethernet over MPLS support? in the patch? Is it the tunnels implementation, and the meaning of the tunnels a= re that an Ethernet frame will pass through an MPLS network in a transparent= basis (just like in L2 switching )? 2)Is there some implementation of PWe3-RFC3985 included in the patch and/= or VPLS? If not, will it be something interesting to add as a feature in the= current implementation? 3) Someone else is working on that? Thanks, Diego G. |

It's ok! I know what MPLS is and how it work. I understand the commands nhlfe, ilm, labelspace, but I don't understand command xc. I understand the commands individually but I don't know make a network with this software (with mpls command): 192.168.2.1----------LER A----------LSR------------LER B----------192.168.4= .4 In http://mpls-linux.sourceforge.net/ there is an example where explain how configure ingress LER (LER A) and egress LER (LER B). And the LSR? Configuration LER A: #mpls nhlfe add key 0 instructions push gen 200 nexthop eth0 ipv4 LSR Key: 0x00000002 #ip route add 192.168.4.4/32 via LSR spec_nh 0x8847 0x2 Configuration LER B: #mpls labelspace add dev eth0 labelspace 0 #mpls ilm add label gen 200 labelspace 0 It is ok? I are not sure! because the label 200 will be changed in the LSR, will not? And how I configure the LSR? Can you help me? Ra=FAl Gil. On 6/16/05, James R. I built some Debian packages to make my life easier. More might follow (iptables probably), but no amy promises. Packages are built in unstable, but will work probably in sarge system as well. The linux-kernel-headers package for example is enough to get quagga-mpls compiled with mpls_method = mpls_null.o and play with ldpd. http://hasso.linux.ee/quagga/mpls-linux/ -- Hasso Tepper Elion Enterprises Ltd. I think this is a great idea, and I'm glad you took the initiative to implement it. I will check to see if SF will allow me to store a 700MB ISO on the mpls-linux project page. Questions I have for you: Will you be willing to provide updated ISOs when I release a new version of mpls-linux? If not would you be willing to write up a small howto for building the ISO from scratch so that I or someone else can continue your work? Thank you for your work.
