I did need to make one small change however: I am testing an ethernet switch between the two machines which only forwards MPLS frames with label 10000. This meant that ARPs sent by either machine were getting dropped. I fixed this by manually adding an entry to each machine's arp table. Regards, Alex |

Hi List, I have some layer 2 networking equipment and I need to demonstrate that it can pass MPLS (over Ethernet) transparently. To this end I decided to download the KnoppixMpls live CD and run it on two machines, then follow the "Simple MPLS example" in http://perso.enst.fr/~casellas/mpls-linux/ch02s03.html to create two endpoints which can ping eachother over a trivial MPLS network (i.e. one Ethernet segment). Unfortunately, I couldn't find the utility "mplsadm" on the live CD, instead there is a program with a different usage called "mpls". Can anybody suggest how I can get mplsadm onto the live CD, or alternatively, how to set up this simple example using mpls instead. Thanks in advance, Alex |

Hello,
Was trying to search for full documentation about all available comands
in new mpls. The old mplsadm has very nice tutorial but the new mpls
command is very poor described.
I was looking at examples on sourcefroge and readme files attached with
patch but they do not explain everything.
I was loking also at P4 site repository (ususccesful).
When (and where) will available detailed description of new mpls
command ?
And one more IMPORTANT thing:
I was trying to install zebra & quagga (MDK 10.1):
rpm -iv zebra-0.94-1+ldp0.310.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libreadline.so.4 is needed by zebra-0.94-1+ldp0.310
rpm -iv quagga-0.97.3-1.FC3mpls1_946a.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libreadline.so.4 is needed by quagga-0.97.3-1.FC3mpls1_946a
I checked out my libraries and I have libreadline.so.4.3.
I made link to this library libreadline.so.4 --> libreadline.so.4.3
But prm still screams for libreadline.so.4.
Do I have to install older version of this library ?
Thank U in advance for help.
Robert

What linux distribution are you building a kernel for? Most likely something with modules or the initrd or something like that is incorrectly configured, probably nothing to do with the MPLS patch. =20 A general question broken into several sub-questions. =20 I would like to use linux-mpls on a network in a lab environment. I need to be able to use a label distribution protocol. Much of the correspondance that I see has to do with creating LSPs using the quagga command line interface. However, I have need to use a label distribution protocol such as "ldp". When using the RPMs on Fedora Core 3 I was able to set up an adjancy with OSPF and send LDP "Hellos" back and forth. I was never able to set up an LSP. Has anyone been able to set up an LSP using ldp-portable? If so, which version of ldp-portable, zebra, and mpls-linux kernel was used? Are iproute2 and iptables also needed. What kernel options are essential to run ldp? Or is the code in a state that is not suitable for lab operation? =20 Thanks Brian |

I took the suggestion and selected the mpls-kernel.1.1 source at the 1182 trouble report. I had no problem building and booting with the kernel when I performed a "make menuconfig" and selelected no changes (I had previously run "make mrproper" to remove any stale .o files). However, when I selected the kernel option "Multiprotocol Label Switching", I was able to build the kernel but not boot. The error message is "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block(0,0)" . I tried other builds where I changed all kernel modules into direct installs and that didn't help also. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the grup boot loaded configuration file because I was able to get the kernel to work if I didn't change anything from the base selections. If mpls-kernel-1.1 is more stable, what kernel selections can I choose or not choose to get it to boot up? =20 Reply: Right now HOL in mpls-kernel-1.1 is danger code, untested. Hello, Has anyone successfully patched kernels 2.6.8 & 2.6.9 under MDK 10.1 and then compiled with libraries? I can not do it. Everytime smth. crashes during compilation. If patching goes OK then compilation fails. If compilation is OK then new kernel panic during booting. I was trying with native kernels from MDK and "pure" kernels form krenel.org. I was trying to install also Zebra0.94+ldp0.310 buit it screams for libreadline.so.4. I have this library in my Linux, so what is wrong ? Robert |

I am working on fc4 and have successfully build ldpd and zebra. However, whenever I start up ldpd, zebra crashes. It is carshing when calling mpls_out_segment_register (I assmue this is trying to get the nhlfe table). The code returns one entry for the out_segment_table but the interface name is garbage and this causes in "assert". I am not currently using the mpls-linu and iproute2 packages. Do I need to use them and has anybody tried ldp-portable&zebra with fc4. Also, I am not sure what to do with mpls-linux. I assume it is a patch to the kernel to enable MPLS. The README says it is for kernel-2.6.9. However, should it be used for mpls-kernel-1.1. =20 =20 I understand that ldp-portable is not ready for users. However, I want to build a small experimental network using label distribution protocols and not command line interfaces. Does the ldp-portable implementation of ldp work in at all and can it be used to set up LSPs? =20 Thanks Brian =20 |

I have not made the correct 'ifdefs' in the quagga-mpls code to support compiling without ipv6. I will gladly accept patches towards this end. Without even reading your email I can tell you you need to use the 'mpls xc' command on your LSRs. I guess I need to post an example that uses this. Answers to your other questions. mpls nhlfe add key 0 tell the kernel to allocate a NHLFE and a key for that NHLFE (think of 'key' in terms of a index). The resulting key is displayed on standard out. This key is the only way to refer to this newly created NHLFE. mpls nhlfe change key 0x2 ... change something about the NHLFE with the key of 0x2 mpls xc add ilm_label gen 100 ilm_labelspace 0 nhlfe_key 0x4 cross connect traffic that arrives on ILM gen:100:0 to the NHLFE with the key 0x4 ip route add ... spec_nh 0x8847 0x3 Add a route that has a special nexthop. 0x8847 indicates its is a MPLS special nexthop. 0x3 indicates that the NHLFE with a key 0x3 is used as part of the special nexthop. BTW please do not spam the mailing list with multiple versions of the same question. I will get around to answering you when I have time, sending the question multiple times will not speed up the process. =09 On Wed, Sep 07, 2005 at 01:22:23AM +0800, taufico jose wrote: > my MPLS test bed >=20 >=20 > A B C D E > =3D=3D1.1---1.2=3D=3D2.1---2.2=3D=3D4.2---4.1=3D=3D5.1---5.2=3D=3D > 3.1----------------------------3.2 >=20 >=20 > linux pc=3D A,B,C,D, and E >=20 > note: B and D consists 3 NICs > : A,C and E consists 2 NICs > : "---" cable > : "=3D=3D" linuc pc >=20 > Hello...I already try the example from (how to set up LSP) through this w= eb page http://mpls-linux.sourceforge.net/simple.php . my MPLS test bed
A B C D E
==1.1---1.2==2.1---2.2==4.2---4.1==5.1---5.2==
3.1----------------------------3.2
linux pc= A,B,C,D, and E
note: B and D consists 3 NICs
: A,C and E consists 2 NICs
: "---" cable
: "==" linuc pc
Hello...I already try the example from (how to set up LSP) through this web page http://mpls-linux.sourceforge.net/simple.php . Thus the set up was successful between A and B (please refer to my test bed above). I also tried to set up LSP between B and A ..and it also was succesful.
My questions are:
1) I got confius when I want to set up LSP between A and C, also between B and D and so forth. How the set up will be? How to set up the ip route between them ?
2) This test-bed intended to transmit MPLS packet from A to E using "ping" command. The packet has two choices, either go through (A)1.1 --1.2--2.1--2.2--4.2--4.1--5.1--5.2(E) or (A)1.1--1.2--3.1--3.2--5.1--5.2(E). For example, output packet from A (gen 16) will go to B to C to D and finally E, while ouput packet from A (gen 20) will go to B to D and finally E. How this network design can be achieved ?
3) Before the LSP has been set up between A and B, I had set up the kernel routing table at each computer to enable computer A to ping each NIC. Do I have to change anything in "kernel routing table" in order to create Label routing table ?
4) From your example given :
uml1
----
[root@uml1 root]# cat /sys/mpls/version
1.946
[root@uml1 root]# mpls nhlfe add key 0
Key: 0x00000002
[root@uml1 root]# mpls nhlfe change key 0x2 instructions push gen 10000 nexthop eth1 ipv4 11.0.1.2
[root@uml1 root]# ip route add 11.0.1.2/32 via 11.0.1.2 spec_nh 0x8847 0x2
[root@uml1 root]# mpls nhlfe show
NHLFE entry key 0x00000002 mtu 1496 propagate_ttl
push gen 10000 set eth1 ipv4 11.0.1.2 (0 bytes, 0 pkts, 0 dropped)
[root@uml1 root]# ip route show
11.0.1.2 via 11.0.1.2 dev eth1 spec_nh 0x8847 0x2 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 scope link
11.0.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 11.0.1.1
127.0.0.0/8 dev lo scope link
[root@uml1 root]#
3i) What is the meaning of
"add key 0"
"key 0x2"
"spec_nh 0x8847 0x2"
From your example, I know the packet is labeled with 10000 and uml2 is set up to receive only MPLS packet with label 1000.
Can somebody help me..my project is nearly success...

I'm not sure where you got the impression that LSPs were persistent across reboots, but they are not. Ways you could re-create them after a reboot are: -write a script -use the static LSP CLI in quagga-mpls > Send instant messages to your online friends http://asia.messenger.yahoo.= com=20 >=20 >=20 > ------------------------------------------------------- > SF.Net email is Sponsored by the Better Software Conference & EXPO > September 19-22, 2005 * San Francisco, CA * Development Lifecycle Practic= es > Agile & Plan-Driven Development * Managing Projects & Teams * Testing & QA > Security * Process Improvement & Measurement * http://www.sqe.com/bsce5sf > _______________________________________________ > mpls-linux-general mailing list > mpl...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mpls-linux-general --=20 James R.
