Mplayer vastly outperforms Adobe Flash 9 in low-powered systems such as those based on one of the Geode processors. There are Greasemonkey scripts (i.e. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/12084) that replace the swf file type with the quicktime file type in the stripped out flash data provided by YouTube. This script invokes the mplayer plugin instead of Adobe Flash Player to stream YouTube media. Is there a similar method available for the general case of swf files or any other video files at other websites? In other words, we would like to invoke mplayer as the plugin for any video we encounter on the web, for example at cnn.com, abc.com, etc. If this is not possible, can anyone comment on whether this is theoretically possible, or whether there is a known impediment to making this work?
