...on a G4 iBook running OSX Tiger 10.4.11. After testing out mplayer v2b6 and deciding it was too sketchy, I trashed it (after quitting). After quitting mplayer, but before trashing it, all of the right-side menu bar items -- WiFi signal strength, time/date, audio volume, battery level -- disappeared from the menu bar. The following suggestions have been tried: - Manually switching show/hide settings for right-side menu bar items had no effect. - Booting into safe mode showed no change. - Creating a new user and logging in as the new user showed no change. - Force-quitting SystemUIServer from inside Activity Monitor had no effect. - Using "Pacifist" to extract and install a new copy of SystemUIServer from my original 10.4 Install Disc followed by reboot had no effect. - deleting com.apple.systemuiserver.plist, com.apple.BezelServices.plist and com.apple.dockfixup.plist followed by reboot had no effect. - Updating to Tiger 10.4.11 had no effect. - Resetting PRAM and NVRAM had no effect. - Using Disk Utility to repair permissions had no effect (disk verified OK) - Manually resetting permissions to the Library in my home folder had no effect. One solution in the forum at Apple involved opening Terminal and issuing instructions to UIServer via the command line invoking something called "sudo". I have a very basic understanding of what "sudo" is and what it does, but the description of the procedure made my brain explode. I've also briefly considered reintalling mplayer, launching it, then quitting, just to see if it resets the menu. I'm also going to open the package file and make sure there isn't an uninstaller I need to run; when I decided mplayer was too sketchy, I trashed the main application, but later, when running an 'mplayer' string search on my machine, I found a couple of what looked like fragments of mplayer, one of which was a .plist, iirc. One nugget of info that may or may not help is that when booted to the OSX Tiger original install disk to run Disk Utility, the right-side menu bar appeared normally, showing a language icon (US Flag icon) and a battery-charge level icon. -- . "Though I could not caution all, I yet may warn a few: Don't lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools!" --grateful dead. ________________________________________________________________ Mike Flugennock, flugennock at sinkers dot org Mike's Political Cartoons: dubya dubya dubya dot sinkers dot org |
