It seems that ever since I got the newest version of MPlayer, every
time I open a new file the master volume on my computer goes up to
the highest. Not much of a problem on it's own, but with external
speakers, it's already caused slight speaker damage, not to mention
potential hearing damage.

In my case, the exact opposite happens. The volume goes all
the way down. It seems as though what happens, is that if
the prefs in the movie file are to have a low volume, the
Master volume goes to that level equally.
Another interesting fact is that the volume control in the
Mplayer app window actually controls the Master volume, not
the app volume seperately.

in my case, it's actually screwed up my intel imac's audio. Now 3/4 of my apps
are either silent or crash due to some form of sound errors... All I did was install
mplayer and test a number of avi's... is there an uninstall process?

I am experiencing this bug as well. I can only hope this isn't some crackhead's idea of a "feature"...
I'll second this as being a real issue. This occurs in b8r5 but not b8r4.
