I have an MKV with the following properties:
h.264 video with VFR (variable framerate, specifically 23 fps for first
& last 3 mins, normal ntsc fps 29.9 there abouts for the rest)
aac audio, likely VBR.
after disabling core image output (my radeon 9000 pro just does
better with quartz output) the playback DID NOT bog down my dual
1.25 ghz g4 machine at all.
However, the video was slow (perhaps 0.75 times normal speed) and
the audio sounded as if one side of the stereo was 90 degrees out of
phase with the other, so you would hear each part of the audio in
"double".
Thanks for any attention dedicated to this.. otherwise GREAT JOB!,
though i do hope the core image will be encorporated as a check box
next binary =).

Special note: the variable framerate support as i understand from
interviewing the encoder is something supposedly incorporated into the
latest MKV container specs, though i can't confirm this with first hand
knowledge.

one more note:
after using qtp to export a vid to h.264 with vbr aac... it played fine.
it appears the issue has something to do with the VFR mkv =/.
