I assume you use ALSA output. This sounds similar to my experience described in http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2996394&group_id=135704&atid=733194 . Another output issue with ALSA I cannot figure out is http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=1850856&group_id=135704&atid=733194 (a proxy for https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3620).

I am a bit frustrated with these ALSA issues that noone is able to diagnose:-/

Is this also happening with mpg123 -a hw:0,0 ? Can you test another output method (jack, for example .. which uses ALSA, but perhaps in a different way)... or even profile where the CPU usage lies?
