Ignoring the rather dramatic headline,
The fact is that using mp3gain destroyed the quality of my sound files.
These files were encoded from the original CDs [which- for my own luck- I Still own, or can re-acquire], and so you can't claim it had lame quality to begin with.
Uploaded is a 12 second sample. From second 6 onwards you can easily hear terrible noise which wasn't there before.
This specific file was adjusted -6dbs.
I've no idea why this happened,
anyone's thoughts are appreciated.

I found the common ground between all files ruined by mp3gain:
They were all encoded using Windows Media Player, then transformed into mp3 using iTunes.
