We can possibly look into providing this through the use of libavcodec, but I don't know if there is much demand for this. iTunes can easily transcode ALAC to mp3 files on its own, and if you're using mp3fs you could store your music in FLAC and play the mp3s through iTunes.

Hello. I'd like to add a +1 for this request. I honestly believe that there are many, many users who would appreciate this. I, for one, would be over the moon if ALAC were introduced as a target format (alternative to mp3). I store much of my music in FLAC format on my Linux server, and would love to be able to see it as ALAC in iTunes, so I could transfer it to my iPhone or my wife's iPod, whilst still retaining the lossless quality.
For now, I can use mp3fs to achieve the same functionality with mp3, but using ALAC would keep it all lossless!
