Well yes, that was of course my very first try, hoping that motion
would know about ffmpeg subdirectories, but it just behaves the
same as with no options, i.e. doesn't find anything and complains
about the first problem, i.e. avformat.h not found.

IMHO it'd be a good idea to have a combined ffmpeg/motion
release. That way one could perhaps write the motion Makefiles
so that they know about ffmpeg headers and libs, and ensure that
the versions are compatable. Otherwise the end user has to
practically debug the make and install strategies of ffmpeg and
motion.
