Wow thanks for all the good info.

I also was just reading about using dd for this - I’m pretty comfortable using dd and know the risks :)

So…anyway… I was able to do this and it WORKED FINE.  But it takes a long time to the dd (read and write both).  But at least it’s an unattended delay - you just launch and come back later.

And it’s running fine.  I’m getting used to the changes in motion.conf, for example seems there is no longer a default target_dir etc.  

Looking forward to experiment with passthrough mode.  (It’s not in the default .conf file - but I will try to add it)
