I did the following The startup functions in /etc/init.d/motion of the latest motion_release on Ubuntu (Hardy) do not work. The following steps made them work on my system: 1. Add the user motion to group video. Otherwise motion cannot access device /dev/videox $adduser motion video 2. Add the following line to /etc/init.d/motion in start branch. Otherwise motion cannot create the PID file mkdir -p $(dirname $PIDFILE) && \ chown motion $(dirname $PIDFILE 3.
