People might be interested in having a look at xshipwars:

It is a client - server model space game with many aims similar to
those of Mote, it certainly does trading. We really need to have a
look at it and see what we can learn from it and how we can make sure
Mote is better than it... ;-)

It is available as a set of Debian packages in version 2.2 and
above. Sadly my machine is not up to running it, i only get 2fps, so i
can't tell you much more about it
