I have a Windows98 partition and a Debian partition dual booting under lilo. I have created a small partition (900Mb) that I was thinking of using to test CD stuff before creating the CD itself. I copied the whole Combined-HeavyGUI to this partition (hda7). I was wondering is it posible add a section to the lilo.conf file to get this to also boot as if it was the CD, or maybe use an .iso image. |

I write from my Debian / Gnome hard disk installation from Morphix LiveCD. I have included my experience in the FAQ HD installation in the wiki. I suggest use Vesa 800 X 600 the first time during installation for XWindow. If the installer recieves no error reporting can upgrade it to 1024 x 756 or higher resolution. By default the usr could be gdm , without any password and with home directory at /home/gdm instead of /var/lib/gdm Regards. I am still working in another topics to get the best installation. Hey list, 0.4-1c is available on sf.net [1], with a few interesting additions (grub to replace syslinux, usb booting). You know the drill, check it out and find out what's broken. For more details, see the changelog [2]. If anyone wants the kernel source, just let me know. Currently I'm working on better integration (well, integration, as there wasn't any before) between minimodules and dpkg/apt-get's database. Besides that, grub integration in the installer is one of the last remaining issues. Does anyone know of a way to autogenerate a menu.lst to display other operating systems? genliloconf works, but is such a mess that I'd rather not try to convert it to make grub menu's. Other than that, I'm open for new splashscreens for grub. See the one in the new boot.img as a starting point, 14-color xpm's are preferable. New ideas for the grub menu on the boot.img are welcome! And before I forget it, if I hadn't mentioned it before, Xconf is available in CVS and as Deb from http://am.xs4all.nl/morphix/debs I'm still working on a mirror, as this is on my measly adsl line, already got a few offers. The source of the morphix installer is in the CVS, but I'm not sure how much it will help you. There is a command line morphixinstaller (morphixinstallcl), but autopartitioning isn't built yet. If you want to know what exactly happens, look in there. /------------------------------------------------------------------\ | Alex de Landgraaf | The cure for boredom is curiosity | | Student AI & CS, VU, A'dam | There is no cure for curiosity | | Phone: 06-16844084 | | | GPG: http://am.xs4all.nl/key_alex.asc /'-'\ | | www.alextreme.org & www.morphix.org ( o o ) | \------------------------------------------oOO0--(_)--0OOo---------/ |

Hello! I've been reading the source of the knx-hdinstall -script, but it seems a= =20 little messy, and I don't know what things are really important during ha= rd=20 disk install. The master piece is UMSDOS and the only requirement is that you have a boot manager installed ([[Grub]]). Using UMSDOS when you boot up Windows, it just sees three ordinary files on the C:\ drive, vmlinuz, image.gz and pup1: -You have to copy vmlinuz and image.gz to the hard drive (from the CD, USB, MorphixInternet and so on). -The "home device" file is "morph1" . The boot manager will load vmlinuz and then load image.gz into the ramdisk. Morphix will then create a file called "morph1", with no encryption and of size 524288K (512M) on hda1, the Windows partition. That file is a 512M ext2 filesystem that is then mounted on /root. When running Morphix, your personal folder is /root, and you have 512M to play with. This is a complete ext2 filesystem, but from Windows point of view, that is, when you boot up Windows, it just sees three ordinary files on the C:\ drive, vmlinuz, image.gz and morph1. ----- Bootloader ( Grub ): Mount the partition that has the /boot/grub directory. Right-click over the file __[grub.conf]__ and open it in a text editor. It will look something like as follows, and you need to add the lines that I have shown in bold: default=1 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,4)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14) root (hd0,4) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.18-14.img title DOS rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 title Morphix Linux rootnoverify (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=49152 PFILE=morph1-none-524288 PHOME=hda1 initrd /image.gz An important thing to understand here is that "(hd0,0)" refers to hda1, "(hd0,4)" is hda5 and "(hd0,2)" is hda3. Apart from editing grub.conf, nothing else is required, as the bootloader will automatically look at that file during booting. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Alex de Landgraaf" <ale...@xs...> To: <mor...@li...> Sent: Monday, January 12, 2004 8:25 PM Subject: Re: [Morphix-devel] automatic installation livecd > > He tried to say that having the option to install linux inside a > > win-partition > > would be nice. Thinking about the partition utilily, I believe a MultiOSInstallation = Utility would be very usefull in Morphix (Morphix =3D morph). This utility would monitor the partitions, the booting and the = installation of Linux Distros. So, I could easily install Morphix in a/some partition(s), Puppy in = another ones and so on, using only the morphix MOIs (MultiOSInstaller). Regards. |

Not sure what all that cuckoo stuff had to do with auto-partitioning, I personally couldn't find what you were talking about (maybe I'm going cuckoo :) As not everyone may know the current state of PM: http://am.xs4all.nl/morphix/debs/partitionmorpher_0.1-2_i386.deb Give it a spin, could use the feedback. Has preliminary support for ext3/xfs/ntfs next to the default filesystems parted supports. I know of qtparted, as PM is partly based on it and has similar features (but is much prettier ;) From all alternatives I've looked at, having script-parsing like diskdrake to autopartition seems the most flexible (and should work best for autoinstalling later on) so I'll probably go in that direction. Drawback is that this is becoming quite a timesink. Then again nobody is waiting for yet another morphix release, so I can just as well Get It Right(tm) while I'm at it... Cheers, and note you don't have to CC me: I'm on this list :) Alex /------------------------------------------------------------------\ | Alex de Landgraaf | The cure for boredom is curiosity | | Student AI & CS, VU, A'dam | There is no cure for curiosity | | Phone: 06-16844084 | | | GPG: http://am.xs4all.nl/key_alex.asc /'-'\ | | www.alextreme.org & www.morphix.org ( o o ) | \------------------------------------------oOO0--(_)--0OOo---------/ |
