Really true. Many used morphix for building special purpose liveCDs and still using. We used it to create EduMorphix which was the first distribution used by IT@School project in Kerala, India (a project to implement IT Education in schools) Now they use a debian based distribution, but that time, Morphix project helped us create a distribution with all the necessary educational packages in a short time and it was one of the key achievements that accelerated the migration of Kerala schools to Free Software. thanks for all those who are behind the Morphix project. regards, ~vimal -- Libarate your documents, Celebrate document freedom day 2010 Use OpenOffice : http://openoffice.org http://documentfreedom.org |

Agreed, and I don't mind fixing the occasional bug in the morphix tools as I still do a build every now and then myself. Nothing has changed in that regard compared to the previous years. It's just that I don't have the time (and haven't for a while) to provide a regular polished distro for end-users and the old website wasn't clear on that (besides the iso's from '06/'07). This required quite a few dependencies, and a base that was too > big to push into RAM. So what do we actually do from within a base module ? Hardware detection, loading of a few assorted drivers, setting up the filesystem with unionfs/aufs and of course, the kernel it's self. The biggest chunk of this is the kernel, so some compromise would have to be made if it were to whittled down to a minimum - Then there is libc6 and the (relatively) bloated support libraries. There are ways and means of stripping these down, but as I look in to it further, it gets messy... > Between xorg autodetection, hal and udev there isn't a lot left nowadays > for hwsetup to do (aside generous amounts of RAM in even the cheapest > laptops). Yes - I had a brief flirt with debian-live - Like many projects, it lacks documentation. Building a base module with mmaker and adding casper/debian-live to the package list works quite well, but it needs a little bit of post-build scripting to get a finished CD. I'm not sure the tools that come with d-l (live-magic) have the flexability that mmaker has in producing a base/main module - That said, mmaker could benefit from a few small enhancements[1]. Regards, Paul. [1] Have added a nostrip option to a base.mod build, another feature that would be helpful is the ability to run pre/post commands when installing a package.. e.g. <package> kernel-image-2.6.32-dohicky <pre> mv /etc/kernel-img.conf /tmp</pre> <pre> echo do_symlink > /etc/kernel-img.conf</pre> <post> mv -f /tmp/kernel-img.conf /etc/</post> </package> > > Such a step would be quite a break from the past, but it's been a long > time coming. It used to be the case that we'd have to do quite a bit of voodoo in the base module in order to get the main module configured and purring along. This required quite a few dependencies, and a base that was too big to push into RAM. Between xorg autodetection, hal and udev there isn't a lot left nowadays for hwsetup to do (aside generous amounts of RAM in even the cheapest laptops). Stripping the base and putting it into the initrd is then the logical step, what we would be left with would be comparable to d-i/debian-live/casper (we could also simply use the debian-live scripts and bolt on support for morphix main/mini modules, which would have my preference). Such a step would be quite a break from the past, but it's been a long time coming. Hell, any excuse to drop cloop along the way is fine by me. There are a few technical open questions (location of lkm's, mainmod init scripts etc) but it should bring about a much simpler morphix that requires a lot less babysitting. On the subject of busybox, I noticed the original source tarball is missing from the Morphix repository - However, it is listed in the Sources, so I guess it may have been there at one time. Not a major issue as it is also available from: http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2005/09/01/debian/pool/main/b/busybox/busybox_1.01.orig.tar.gz Regards, Paul. |

I put the latest (as of the 5th of September) KDE main module and base module together, tested it in an emulator, thought it worked quite fine and uploaded it here: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/morphix/autobuilds/iso/ It's the morphix-kde-20080905.iso file of course, with the checksum in the corresponding morphix-kde-20080905.iso.md5sum This was done after a request in #morphix, but I intend to do the same for the Gnome and Lightgui versions (including some light testing) and will even try to get aquamorph into shape again (for really real(tm) this time. No, really!). That way we at least have some recent/pretty decent .iso's to refer new users to. Linkage from the morphix.org site will be updated accordingly. Hi All, (Sorry if this is double post wrong to address) I put together a little python script, live-xmaker. [1][2][3]. Live-xmaker is a command line front-end to live-helper, inspired by morphix-mmaker[4][5] (written by Alex de Landgraaf). This allows all the configurations for a liveCD build to be specified in one XML file. For example:- live-xmaker --xml /usr/share/live-xmaker/templates/lightgui_all.xml --output ./lightgui.iso 1: http://autotesting.livecd.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=live-xmaker.git;a=summary 2: git clone git://autotesting.livecd.org/git/live-xmaker.git 3: http://autotesting.livecd.org/debs/live-xmaker_0.1-1_i386.deb 4: http://www.morphix.org 5: http://www.morphix.org/doc/how_tos/all_man_pages/html/ar01s07.html Example templates show what options are currently from a complex example [6] to more simple examples[7][8]. 6: http://autotesting.livecd.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=live-xmaker.git;a=blob_plain;f=templates/lightgui_all.xml 7: http://autotesting.livecd.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=live-xmaker.git;a=blob_plain;f=templates/lightgui.xml 8: http://autotesting.livecd.org/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=live-xmaker.git;a=blob_plain;f=templates/very-simple-xfce.xml I plan to update live-xmaker with all the possible options available via live-helper.
