Given that we seem to be going around a loop, very slowly, I have an
alternate proposal.

I'm still finding it hard to talk about this stuff in the abstract.
Simon, how about you come up with cases that you think represent what
you want to do. We (collectively) will figure out the best solution for
each one. Eventually, we'll either be unable to solve your problem and
have to extend things, or we won't.
