For english/Chinese, "encoding" should be "iso10646-1"
for usual ttf fonts and not "iso8859-1"/"big5-0"
So the line should be looks like:
BIG5=AR PL Mingti2L Big5-iso10646-1;
For japanese, your setting should work as far as the font is registered properly. Do your other xft aware applications display chinese/japanese?

What is the minimum aafont file that is required to get anti-aliased Chinese/Japanese text working? I have
ISO8859_1=Luxi Mono-iso8859-1;
JISX0208_1978=MS Gothic-iso10646-1;
JISX0208_1983=MS Gothic-iso10646-1;
JISX0208_1990=MS Gothic-iso10646-1;
BIG5=AR PL MingTi2L Big5-big5-0;
If I run mlterm -A, I can see the English characters, but Chinese or Japanese characters come out as little rectangles.
