This depends on many things, firstly on whether requires you to use smtp auth to send email (does thunderbird require a login and password to _send_ Email?). Next, friends don't let friends use sendmail :) 3rd, you didn't say what distro you use. On debian/ubuntu, I would recommend you install exim which comes with a fairly easy to use (as smtp servers go) setup screen. Postfix is otherwise an option. Either way, unless you find some way to have mh use some smtp lib (i.e. directly connect to AT&T to send the EMail over port 25 as opposed to accepting it over a sendmail wrapper and using AT&T as a smartrouter), prepare to RTFM.
