In theory, Insteon is backwards compatible with X10. In practice, I've read (see Cocoontech) that existing X10 devices become less reliable once Insteon devices are introduced. I've never used Insteon devices primarily because X10 is inexpensive and fairly reliable (once you suppress most sources of electrical noise). I use Smarthome's Switchlinc, Keypadlinc, and Appliancelinc X10 components (acquired via eBay) plus a few X10 Pro lamp and appliance modules. Everything works just fine. I've heard good things about zwave but haven't switched because: 1.) X10 works well for me 2.) Zwave devices cost more than X10 3.)
