In my experience, RRD has always put time across the X-axis and the measured value on the Y-axis. I don't remember where I read it - maybe in the docs - but if you tell RRD that samples will be stored every 5 minutes, it will interpolate samples that are slightly out of the time bracket. That is, if a sample is a few seconds late or early, the value will be adjusted up or down a fraction to follow the curve.
