 From one MH newbie to another, I have seen this with other programs and 
it has always been caused by some other program.  For instance, the Palm 
Pilot Hotsync manager is often configured to listen to COM 1, even if 
you use TCP/IP or USB to connect your Palm.  There are numerous other 
examples.  Make absolutely sure that no other program wants to talk to 
COM 1, including firecracker's own software that you mentioned, and MH 
should be able to open the port.
