If it has a visual gage you could set one or more optical sensors at points you wish to monitor and then read them any number of ways. probably for only a few bucks. `You could also check for interesting ideas from back issues of Circuit Cellar, or maybe Nuts & Volts. It may require trying to think of how to creatively use some widget in a way different from intended. Ultimately you are balancing your own time and effort against commercial cost, but I can think of alot of differnet ways to create a level sensor, and even more if all you need is a single almost out of fuel sensor.
