It now being Sunday, I now learn that the Sunday image they make a jpg, and 
the rest of the week gifs.

#       searchpattern <IMG SRC="(/comics/dilbert/archive/images/.+?\.gif)"
         searchpattern <IMG SRC="(/comics/dilbert/archive/images/.+?\....)"

is a somewhat non subtle fix.
